The N.M. stands for Nathan Meyer Rothschild, third of five sons to Mayer Amschel Rothschild, and second generation of the Rothschild banking dynasty. Nathan Meyer formed NM Rothschild & Sons in 1809, focused gold bullion.
Controversy surrounds N.M. Rothschild & Sons as the firm used gold bullion to help finance wars, and used insider knowledge to make vast fortunes in the markets. Colluding with the four other principal gold bullion traders and refiners of the time (Mocatta & Goldsmid, Sharps Wilkins, Pixley & Abell, and Samuel Montagu & Co), N.M. Rothschild & Sons held the first London Gold Fix on September 12th, 1919 – fixing the price of gold worldwide.
